EZCheck Services, Inc. introduced two new products recently.
EZApproval enables businesses that conduct payment transactions to
remotely access guarantee and check verification services via a touch-
tone phone.
With EZApproval, merchants have access to EZCheck’s national check
writer, bank account validation and account status databases. The
merchant’s ID is automatically recalled and a response is returned in
a few seconds. EZApproval also guarantees payments, eliminating the
risk of accepting checks.
EZCollect enables merchants to collect on nonsufficient funds (NSF)
checks at no cost. Checks returned as NSF are automatically directed
from the business’ bank to EZCheck for collection. Once the check is
collected, the merchant receives the full face value via an
electronic deposit (one per month). EZCollect customers post a notice
at each point-of-sale and write the merchant ID number of the face of
the check before it is deposited.
Cardtronics, Inc. and HSBC Bank USA, N.A., recently closed a deal
that will enable HSBC to brand up to 59 ATMs in Walgreens locations
in northern New Jersey. Installations are expected to be completed
by early June.
In addition, all HSBC-branded ATMs in Walgreens stores will be
surcharge-free to the bank’s customers – just like its on-premise ATMs.
The Electronic Clearing House, Inc. (ECHO) and its wholly owned
subsidiary, XPRESSCHEX, Inc., have reached an agreement with LML
Patent Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of LML Payment Systems, Inc.,
to settle a litigation matter alleging infringement of certain LML
patents.
Under the terms of the settlement, ECHO and XPRESSCHEX entered into
an agreement to license LML’s patents for electronic check conversion
in the direct consumer field. Each of ECHO, XPRESSCHEX and LML also
agreed, for a period continuing through June 1, 2009, not to
initiate any other patent infringement claims in the United States or
Canada against each other.
Recent data published by the Federal Reserve Bank predicted that by
next year, the Fed’s ACH volume will equal its check clearing volume.
So a NACHA-led industry group has launched a new, interactive Web
site to educate consumers about the benefits of using electronic
payments, www.electronicpayments.org. This website contains
information on direct deposit and direct payment and also defines
check conversion and discusses how it differs from other types of
electronic payments.
First American Payment Systems has become a preferred partner of
AdvanceMe, Inc., a provider of credit card receivable funding for
small-and-medium-size businesses.
Using future credit card sales as collateral, AdvanceMe is able to
provide merchants funding through credit card processing. This
partnership will enable First American to provide a funding solution.
Document imaging is now available through Metavante Corp.’s point-of-
sale solutions.
Metavante’s imaging solution enables lenders to capture, store and
provide instant access to credit files and documents. Credit
information is electronically stored in a centralized repository that
can be accessed by qualified personnel from any secure remote location.
InComm has acquired the majority interest of Airtime Technologies,
Inc.’s capital stock. Airtime Technologies, Inc. markets point-of-
sale prepaid and debit transaction solutions.
The acquisition of Airtime marks the third recent acquisition by
InComm, which also purchased KwikSystems, LLC and Prepaid
Enterprises, LLC. InComm plans to integrate the newly acquired
businesses to further enhance its technology transactions solutions
for service providers. InComm also recently acquired PRE Holdings,
Inc., a deal that closed in June.
AmbironTrustWave recently renewed its status as a Qualified Data
Security Company (QDSC) providing PCI-related on-site assessment and
remediation services to all businesses that process and/or transmit
credit card data.
In addition to its status as a QDSC, AmbironTrustWave is qualified by
all the card associations to provide vulnerability scanning and
incident response services to all businesses in the payment card
industry.
Precidia Technologies, Inc. has incorporated its protocol conversion
and network management technology with the TNS FusionPoint Express
managed merchant Internet gateway offering. FusionPoint Express
provides a managed, secure path for legacy dial and serial point-of-
sale devices over TNS or customer-provided IP networks to major card
processors worldwide.
Precidia customized its access devices and management system to
support TNS’ monitoring and authentication requirements, providing a
range of powerful new deployment, diagnostic and transaction routing
capabilities.
Axalto recently unveiled its turnkey smart card personalization offer
through the Visa Smart Breakthrough program, which is designed to
bringing cost-effective solutions and innovative technologies to
member financial institutions, and to facilitate the EMV migration
process.
Axalto will be offering a “fee-per-card” scheme that allows banks to
migrate to the advanced EMV standard without a large upfront investment.
As part of the Visa Smart Breakthrough program, Axalto offers Visa
member banks its field-proven personalization package, which includes
data preparation, personalization software suite for EMV cards,
quality control software, as well as ongoing technical support.
Eleven Wireless and Shift4 have partnered together to better serve
the hospitality industry.
ElevenOS is the on-demand guest broadband software solution from
Eleven. $$$ ON THE NET is the real-time electronic payment gateway
system from Shift4. Both are now integrated to allow hotel properties
using ElevenOS to accept credit cards for service through the payment
gateway from Shift4.
Covelight Systems recently unveiled FraudProbe, a new platform for
detecting fraud in online channels.
FraudProbe is a turnkey, network-based appliance that passively
monitors online transaction activity to and from Web applications.
FraudProbe delivers a highly compressed data set directly to the
enterprise fraud management system.
SLIM CD certifies their software with major check processing services
utilizing MagTek’s check reading products. SLIM CD employed MagTek’s
Mini MICR and MICR Plus products to enable processing of check
verification and guarantee services from Certegy.
The SLIM CD platform can support MagTek’s products to process credit
card transactions through a myriad of transaction processors such as,
Vital, First Data, Nova, Paymentech, Global Payments, RBS Lynk,
Heartland and Fifth Third.
First Data Corp. recently launched an enhanced fraud detection
solution for First Data’s global online merchants.
The fraud solution is designed to provide merchants with multi-layer
fraud prevention, which will reduce chargebacks and manual validation
expenses.
ScanAlert and MODASolutions have teamed together to provide a new
security solution for e-commerce.
When shoppers click on the SECURE-eBill option at checkout, an e-mail
invoice, the ‘eBill’, confirming their purchase arrives in their
email instantly. Consumers then pay the invoice using their secure
online banking account, just as they would pay their utility bills.
The money is transferred, bank-to-bank, and the transaction is complete.
Transaction Network Services, Inc. recently entered into a strategic
relationship with Mars Electronics International, a manufacturer of
unattended payment systems.
Under terms of the non-exclusive relationship, TNS and MEI will
provide vending customers with the ability to purchase items via
cash, coins, debit or credit cards supported by MEI’s Remote Data
Port technology.
The MEI Remote Data Port supports the MEI EASITRAX Vending Management System, which offers dynamic scheduling, machine status alerts and curbside polling.
COCARD, a credit card ISO, recently announced its monthly new
merchant count has surpassed 1000.
Global Electronic Technology, Inc. has been awarded Visa’s Payment
Application Best Practices (PABP) certification for its application,
SafeGuard. Global Electronic Technology is one of less than 30 firms
to hold the certification.
Global Electronic Technology, Inc. also successfully passed Visa’s
Cardholder Information Security Program (CISP) for the third
consecutive year.
ENCORE Electronic Services Cooperative, Inc. and CO-OP Network
recently executed a letter of intent to merge. ENCORE, a Credit Union
Service Organization based in Falls Church, Va., offers EFT/ATM
services, shared branching, merchant and card services to its credit
union members.
The cooperative, owned by 124 member credit unions, became a CO-OP
Network member/shareholder in June 2003.
This new agreement with ENCORE marks the seventh merger for CO-OP Network in the last decade. During this time, CO-OP Network has grown from 329 California and Nevada member credit unions with 1,400 ATMs to nearly 2,000 member credit unions across the country with access to 25,000 surcharge-free ATMs (6,000 deposit-taking).
Global Payments, Inc. recently agreed to provide authorization,
capture and settlement processing services, as well as BIN
sponsorship for Advanced Payment Solutions, an independent sales
organization that offers payment processing services for an array of
merchant businesses.
Shift4 recently released secure versions of the MICROS 3700 and 8700
point-of-sale payment drivers, which brings these systems in line
with the latest card association security requirements.
Shift4 utilized a combination of its Tokenization technology, which
replaces the credit card number with a randomly generated unique ID,
and data truncation. Tokenization eliminates the need to store credit
card data anywhere in the system, enabling the systems to comply with
the PABP requirements while still allowing for full reporting,
incremental authorizations, credits and so forth.
AMCORE Bank and First Data Corp. recently announced a long-term
merchant services alliance. According to the agreement, First Data
will provide all merchant payment processing and service for new
customers on behalf of AMCORE Bank.
First Data will provide AMCORE Bank merchants with customer service,
marketing and sales support, equipment servicing and training and
payment processing including authorization, settlement, chargeback,
reconciliation, credit, debit, gift card, check verification and
check guarantee services.
Ezic, Inc. recently released Direct Mode Version 3., which includes
full support for subscription management, automated recurring billing
and a scriptable interface for affiliate data downloads.
Ezic’s Direct Mode is a network API which can be accessed using all
major programming languages to execute payment transactions for
electronic commerce, subscription and recurring billing, call centers
and card-present retail environments.
Transaction data is sent to Ezic’s system over an SSL encrypted connection from the payment application software used by the merchant. This gives the merchant the ability to completely customize and integrate real-time payment processing into their own applications, whether developed in-house or purchased from a third party software vendor.
TeleCheck Services, Inc., a subsidiary of First Data Corp., recently
acquired substantially all the assets of ClearCheck, Inc., a full-
service provider of return check management systems for major
retailers and supermarkets across the United States. Financial terms
of the transaction were not disclosed.
The ClearCheck services include Web-based products and tools that
provide clients easy access to view and analyze their check
collection portfolio and a streamlined process to handle returned
checks.
CrossCheck, Inc. and MagTek recently announced the certification of
two versions of MagTek’s MICRImage check scanner for deployment with
the CrossCheck PC Conversion Plus service - MICRImage RS232 with
modem and MICRImage with Ethernet connectivity. With the scanner,
merchants can process check payments for conversion through
CrossCheck’s Conversion Plus service through their PC. CrossCheck is
offering both traditional dial and high-speed Internet processing.
CrossCheck will make the PC option available to any merchant using
their CrossCheck Conversion Plus service. The CrossCheck Conversion
Plus service enables a merchant to convert checks at the point of
purchase, eliminating the need to take checks to the bank for
deposit. Check information is sent through a POS terminal or by PC
using the CrossCheck Web site and funds are ACH’d into the merchant
account. CrossCheck’s Conversion Plus service includes business check
conversion and guarantee features.
Hypercom recently entered into an exclusive software agreement
wherein US Bankcard Services, Inc., will offer to U.S. retailers the
first multi-language card payment terminal featuring Chinese and
English graphics and text.
U.S. Bankcard Services, Inc. expects to sell thousands of the dual-
language Hypercom T7Plus with C application credit/debit terminals to
a market comprised of more than 60,000 Chinese-American retailers
according to the latest economic census from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Hypercom’s T7Plus with Big 5 Chinese character font software is
configured specifically to facilitate its operations by merchants in
either Chinese or English languages. Big 5 is a character encoding
method used in Taiwan and Hong Kong to enable traditional Chinese
characters to be rendered on computers.
Commerciant LP recently launched Mobilescape 5000, a wireless
handheld device that accepts and processes both checks and credit
cards in a single, integrated device.
For the millions of merchants who take payments in the field, the
“cashless economy” is a growing reality: a 2004 study issued by the
U.S. Federal Reserve stated that electronic payment transactions grew
to 44.5 billion and nearly 37 billion check transactions occurred in
2003. Yet, for a merchant who cannot easily and securely process
checks and credit cards in the field, bounced checks, lost checks,
and “card not present” credit card transactions all threaten the
bottom line.
The launch of the Mobilescape 5000 provides merchants with a solution that includes hardware, software, integration services, wireless service, transaction processing, and 24x7 customer support and maintenance.
Amico Products has teamed up with Direct Technology Innovations to
offer their Share The Wealth Membership credit card processing. DTI
is a full service merchant services provider and an industry leader,
providing to Fortune 500 chains as well as small independent businesses.
DTI is offering John Amico members who join up $300 toward John Amico
product purchases and offering members $100 more in credit to sponsor
another member. Members who sponsor another business associate not
affiliated with John Amico, such as a neighboring business, will also
receive $250 in product credit.
TNS, Inc. recently received a non-binding proposal from members of
senior management led by John J. McDonnell, Jr., its Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer, to acquire the outstanding shares of TNS for
a cash price of $22.00 per share.
In the aggregate, the management group making the proposal currently
holds more than 5 percent of the outstanding shares of TNS common
stock. The proposal is subject to a number of conditions, including,
among other things: obtaining financing for the proposed transaction
on satisfactory terms and the negotiation and execution of definitive
transaction agreements on mutually acceptable terms.
The TNS board has established a special committee consisting of three independent directors to evaluate the proposal and to determine what is in the best interests of TNS and its public stockholders. The committee is authorized to negotiate on behalf of TNS with respect to the proposal and to consider and pursue all strategic alternatives for TNS. The special committee is authorized to retain independent financial, legal and other advisors.
Citizens Financial Group, Inc. recently started providing Citizens
Bank and Charter One Bank customers with MasterCard PayPass
contactless payment technology on their debit cards.
To use the feature, Citizens and Charter One customers tap their
PayPass-enabled debit cards on the special PayPass reader located
near the cash register of participating retailers. For PayPass
transactions under $25, there is no need for customers to sign a
receipt. To signal a customer’s purchase is complete, the reader will
flash a light and produce a tone sound.
Merchant acquirer United Bank Card, Inc. recently replaced its
current authorization service with DialPay, an advanced payment
processing technology from Vital. Going forward, all merchants signed
on with UBC will be provided with a DialPay account.
DialPay is an automated response system that can be used when a
merchant requires a voice authorization for Visa and MasterCard
transactions. This system enables merchants to use a touch-tone
telephone in the same way they would use a POS terminal by following
voice prompts and entering the appropriate information on the
telephone’s keypad.
